Discussion about Lip Fillers in Glasgow , Volume or Balance or Rejuvenation ? By Dr Rita and Nurse Gail

Dr Rita

Hi, everybody. Those of you that don’t know me, my name is Rita, and I’m the Clinical Director of the Peppermint Group. We’re joined by nurse Gail, if you’d like to introduce yourself.

Nurse Gail

Hello there. My name is Gail. I’m a nurse, and I work alongside Rita.

Dr Rita

Hi, so today, we are going to be talking about lips again, but we’re talking about what kind of lips, in the sense of what kind of treatments and what types of patients that we’re getting through the clinic. The first thing that we’re going to be talking about is volumisation of the lip. Second thing is balancing the lip, and then rejuvenating the lips. We’ll tell you what takes place, so I’ll pass you over onto Gail, if you could talk a bit about this.

Nurse Gail

Okay, so there’s a few different types of patients that we get in to the clinic looking for lip treatments. We have the young girls who want to have volume, sometimes a lot of volume, sometimes more volume than we would be happy to put in. We have maybe slightly older ladies, maybe our age.

Dr Rita

Our age. Yeah, definitely.

Nurse Gail

Is that us? Are we that category now?

Dr Rita

Definitely us.

Nurse Gail

They’re looking for just a little bit of replaced volume. As we get older, the lip and the whole of the mouth area loses volume, and that can all affect the shape of the lip. Your lips can look quite old and quite dry if you’ve lost volume.

Dr Rita

Absolutely.

Nurse Gail

We can replace that volume. We’re not going to make you look like a Kardashian with big, huge lips.

Dr Rita

No. Absolutely not.

Nurse Gail

But we will restore, maybe, the look of your lip to what it was maybe 10 years ago.

Dr Rita

Absolutely.

Nurse Gail

Because a lot of people I think maybe our age don’t want to have big pouts.

Dr Rita

No, they don’t. Absolutely not.

Nurse Gail

A lot of people, they’re a bit scared, maybe if they’re a bit older. They’re a bit scared of having lip fillers because they don’t want to look like a Kardashian, like the younger girls might do, but we can tailor that, and we tailor that to everybody.

Dr Rita

The other thing, what if a patient then, Gail, came along, and we had all of these things to address? Could that be addressed with different types of fillers that are available on the market?

Nurse Gail

Yeah. It could be. We use very good fillers. Some of them are for projection and volumizing more than hydration, but all of them will hydrate because they’re hyaluronic acids, so they are naturally going to attract moisture to the area, which will make your lips look and feel much more youthful and just give them a bit more bounce. So they-

Dr Rita

We all like a bit of bounce.

Nurse Gail

We like a bit of bounce. That can be very attractive without going crazy. We’re not going to go mad. So yeah, so we can choose the product and the amount of product to the patient, can’t we? It’s all about the individual.

Dr Rita

So, Gail can I ask you a question? I spoke in the last live video that I’ve had my lips enhanced, and it’s taken quite a few treatments over a period of time to build that up. I’m giving my age away here, I’m 42, and at the start I had reasonably small lips and wanted to rejuvenate them and enhance them, but I didn’t want for them to look too big. Have you had any lip enhancements yourself?

Nurse Gail

I have. I go for more of the minimal look. I don’t want to look too big, but every time I get them done, I always think, “That’s fine, that’s enough,” and then two weeks later, I think, “I wish I’d got a bit more.”

Dr Rita

Yes very true.

Nurse Gail

I’m at the stage now where I’m thinking, “I should’ve got a bit more,” just for a natural look, just to make it look like we used to look. I used to have quite full lips, but they’re not so full now I’m older, sadly. But yes.

Dr Rita

Gail, I know you work with our team and you see lovely patients in the Peppermint Group, but also the other hat that you wear, you work for quite a large company that makes fillers, one of the biggest companies in the world.

Nurse Gail

Yes I do.

Dr Rita

When patients come to see us at the clinic, as I said before, one size of shoe does not fit all, in my last video. What we have in the range within the treatments that we do at the practice, there is a whole range of fillers isn’t there?

Nurse Gail

Right.

Dr Rita

Would you like to explain them? We don’t need to go into actual brand names, but maybe we could talk about the different fillers, that there’s a different thing that will achieve a different result for each patient.

Nurse Gail

Yeah, absolutely.

Dr Rita

First of all you’re talking about, say, hydration.

Nurse Gail

For hydration, well all of them will hydrate to a certain extent. We also have a product actually which will give hydration only for maybe even somebody older … Are there people older than us? Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.

Dr Rita

Less of the grays. The gray is covered. The gray is definitely covered.

Nurse Gail

They might not want any volume at all, but we can give this product, and this will just hydrate because it will attract moisture. You can get swelling with that particular product.

Within this huge range that we use, this is why we love it, because we have so much versatility. We have products that have been for projection. We have others that are really better for shaping. Both of the ranges within our big range-

Dr Rita

Absolutely.

Nurse Gail

Will do all of that, so it depends on the individual, and we do tailor it completely to yourself. We will do a full consultation and assessment before we start with your individual.

Dr Rita

I’d just like to add, with all of these different range of fillers within our clinic, we all have multiple different ways to inject these fillers to achieve the desired result that you want. Talking about volume, we’ve talked about volume quite a bit, that we can project. We can lift. We can do quite a bit there.

Balancing the lip, that’s also involved with a bit of volume, but sometimes a patient may come to you that has a slight asymmetry where maybe part of the lip is lower than the other part of the lip. At that part we can place product that can then scaffold or structure that lip up to look the same as the other side but always taking in mind when you do do that correction, that that side of the lip will always feel to the tongue or the touch to feel as if it has more product in it, but it should not look as if it has obviously more product in it. It should just look like it’s just like the other side.

That’s where your balancing comes in, and then again, relating back to rejuvenation of the lips, these hydrating fillers are very much like injecting moisturizer almost, if you want to call it that.

Nurse Gail

Yeah, absolutely.

Dr Rita

Products are made from non-animal based hyaluronic acid, which is made naturally in the body but this is an artificial version of that that we then place in the lips, and they have different compressibility, different sizes. That’s kind of what we’re trying to say here.

Nurse Gail

Yeah, the other thing to say, which we get a lot of questions about is pain related. Your lips are very, very sensitive.

Dr Rita

Oh, yes, that’s true. Very good question.

Nurse Gail

We’re not going to say it’s completely pain free. It can feel a bit uncomfortable and sting but it’s not terrible. We do always put a numbing cream on to make sure that you are more comfortable. It doesn’t last for very long. It’s a tiny needle or a canula if we use it that way. There are different ways, as Rita said, that we can treat the lip to get your desired effect.

Dr Rita

In essence what we’re trying to say is we can either put a topical agent onto the lips that would take the edge off the actual device that we use to inject with, as Gail was saying a needle or a canula, but that is something that we can discuss when you get in the clinic. There are other options for people that are really very, very nervous or very needle phobic or uncomfortable with treatments. My background being a dentist and Gail’s background being a nurse, we can put some local anesthetic under the lip area to allow the process to be much more comfortable.

If anybody has any questions, please feel free to email them in or come in for an informal chat.

Nurse Gail

I think when you have your lips treated, they do take a couple of weeks to properly settle.

Dr Rita

Of course.

Nurse Gail

Especially if we’ve been treating-

Dr Rita

Very good question.

Nurse Gail

An asymmetry or trying to restore balance. As Rita said, we might have put more product on one side than the other side. That’s maybe going to have a little bit more trauma on the side that’s had a bit more product and can sometimes swell slightly more. Don’t go away and think that is your final result.

Dr Rita

Absolutely.

Nurse Gail

It will just swell and settle and swell and settle for even up to two weeks.

Dr Rita

Up to two weeks, absolutely, yeah. My lips are sore for three weeks.

Nurse Gail

I am a sweller. I have to be very careful. There’s one particular product in our range that doesn’t really cause swelling, and I have that one. Other products, I have tried them all, I swell, but it does resolve fairly quickly.

Dr Rita

I think my favorite product of all in the range is Restylane Kysse.

Nurse Gail

Mine too.

Dr Rita

Yeah, I love that product. When you place that product on a patient, or even on myself when I’ve had it, there’s so little swelling.

Nurse Gail

That’s the one I’m talking about.

Dr Rita

Yeah, that’s the one you had.

The Restylane kysee is the one that gives hardly any swelling.

Yes, fantastic.

Nurse Gail

It’s a super product to work with.

We’re going to leave it there today, and we’d love to see you in clinic for a consultation. Nurse Gail and myself would love to see you too. You can just come and and have a chat with us. You don’t have to feel forced to go ahead with any treatment if you decide not to.

Nurse Gail

think just before we go, for our age group maybe, it’s maybe not just the lips that would need to be treated in isolation.

Dr Rita

Yeah, absolutely.

We can discuss all of that, because every person had a proper full face planning as part of your consultation.

Nurse Gail

Full face assessment, because maybe the lip is the thing that bothers them the most, but actually there’s a lot of other areas that might need a little bit of lifting

Dr Rita

Yes, just to get the desired effect, and we can chat about that. We would love to do that. That’s what we enjoy, and that’s what we’re here for.

We’ll see you soon.
